Editing

How to fit a resume on one page without tiny text

Reduce repetition and low-value content before reducing type size. Keep the experience that best supports the target role, shorten long bullets, and remove sections that repeat the same information. One page is a useful constraint for a focused application, not a rule for every profession or career stage.

Give each line a job

Read each section and ask what new evidence it adds. A summary that repeats the skills list, several bullets describing the same task, and a long paragraph about the employer all consume space without necessarily helping the reader understand you.

Try a content budget: a compact contact header, a short summary only if it adds context, a few relevant experience entries, and concise education and skills sections. This is an editing starting point, not a required count of jobs or bullets.

  1. Remove duplicate claims across the summary and experience.
  2. Compress older or less relevant roles before cutting recent evidence.
  3. Replace paragraphs about responsibilities with specific contributions.
  4. Keep details that explain scope, ownership, or a verifiable result.

Shorten the sentence, keep the evidence

Long openings such as “was responsible for helping with” often hide the main action. Name the action first, then the object of the work and any necessary context. The fictional example below becomes shorter without adding a stronger claim than the source supports.

Fictional operations bullet
Starting point

Was responsible for helping the operations team with the preparation of a weekly report that tracked customer support requests and highlighted repeated issues.

After editing

Prepared a weekly support report that tracked incoming requests and highlighted recurring issues for the operations team.

The edit removes verbal padding while retaining the frequency, deliverable, subject, and audience.

Check the actual file at a readable size

After editing the content, compare layouts. A compact layout may fit the same wording more efficiently, but that is not an excuse to create a dense wall of text. Open the exported file at normal reading size and check the last lines of every section.

Tailor targets a one-page resume and checks page fit before PDF export. You can edit wording and switch layouts without spending another AI generation. If the draft runs long, shorten the content or request a new AI version, which uses another generation.

If an employer asks for a detailed CV, an academic publication history, or a longer specialized application, follow those requirements. Tailor’s one-page workflow may not be the right format for that document.

Common questions

Must every resume be one page?

No. Appropriate length depends on the role, experience, and application instructions. This guide focuses on creating a concise one-page version when that serves the application.

Does changing templates use an AI credit?

No. In Tailor, manual edits and template changes do not spend generations. Asking AI to generate a new version does.

Put the advice to work.

Bring a job description and your background. Leave with a draft you can make your own.
