An ATS-friendly resume format you can check yourself

Give the parser a predictable structure

An applicant tracking system can store applications, extract resume fields, and support a recruiter’s workflow. Parsing behavior varies. A readable document helps you inspect the result instead of depending on a universal “ATS approved” label.

CareerOneStop recommends avoiding tables, text boxes, columns, and graphics that can disrupt parsing. Start with familiar headings such as Experience, Education, Projects, and Skills. Keep your name and contact information as text.

Test what survives outside the design

A PDF can look tidy while its extracted text reads in the wrong order. Before sending it, select and copy its contents into a plain-text editor. Read from the candidate name to the last section. Then check the actual application form after upload; a copy-and-paste test is useful, but it is not a substitute for that employer’s parser.

1. Confirm your name, email, and phone are complete.
2. Check that each job title stays near its employer and dates.
3. Look for missing letters, broken bullets, or overlapping sections.
4. Follow the requested file type. Tailor exports PDF and plain text; it does not currently export DOCX.

Use job language where it is accurate

If a posting says “customer onboarding” and that is the work you performed, use those words in an experience bullet. Do not paste the full job description into the document or hide keywords in white text. A recruiter still needs to understand what you contributed.

Tailor offers several layouts for the same draft. Choose one you can read comfortably, verify the exported PDF, and correct imported fields before submitting. Treat a successful parse as a formatting check, not evidence that you are guaranteed an interview.
